View Full Version : FYF - Year 3
~ < o > ~
08-06-2009, 07:13 PM
This year, we're gonna flip the script a little and do an auction draft.
If you don't know what an auction draft is, you bid for people to fill your rosters, and the highest bidder wins the player.
It's quite a bit different then the regular selection process, but I kinda dig it.
Anyway, all people who were involved in FYF last year are eligible to return, and if there's any new folks wanting to try it out, respond here.
As of right now, our draft will be on Saturday, September 5th, at Midnight Eastern. That means one minute after Friday ends. If that's a problem, let me know, see if we can't work out a better time for everybody.
All people from last year have two weeks to respond before I go looking for replacements.
Also, keeper rules are still in play, so remember to select your four keepers [if you want to keep four people] by August 26th at 5 pm Eastern.

I'm still in. So, do we need to pay our keepers as well? Also how much money do we get for the auction? And how much do free agents cost?
I'm new to the auction format as you can probably guess.

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea as far as how keepers are used in auction drafts.
I'm also not entirely sure how much money we will be given, but I did a few mock auction drafts and they were always 200 dollars, but those were regular leagues, and FYF has quite a bit more roster slots then those.
People cost based on how much other people want them. If everybody wastes their money in the first two or three rounds, you can probably get some amazing deals in the fourth for low money.

I've got one spot, because Doug decided he didn't want to finish the season last year.
After that, I believe we're full unless we expand the league to 14 teams. Therefore, I'd need two new teams after Cannon to sign up before that would happen.
~ < o > ~
08-07-2009, 05:21 PM
As far as keeper values go, I figured out that I can personally set how much they cost each team.
They have them currently set at 1$ each, which is bullshit, so I'll change that to a number more reflective of what they should cost. More then likely, I'll check what their usually going for in mock drafts, and deduct ten bucks or whatever.
So, if LaDainian Tomlinson is usually going for 55$ in ESPN mock drafts, I'll price him at 45$ for a keeper.
But yeah, everbody gets 200$ to fill out their team as they see fit, and I'd say the highest priced guy is usually Adrian Peterson at around 65$- 70$.

08-07-2009, 05:26 PM
One more thing, if anybody has any rule changes/scoring changes they'd like to see implemented, bring them up now.
The system has been the same for two years, and looks to be the same as before this year, but I'll hear any complaints/ideas anybody has.
Generally, if you want to win the close games in FYF, you need your Team Defense to score positive, your HC to score positive, and to preferably have QBs as your Offensive Utility Players, because QBs tend to score points the most consistently in FYF.

I'm still a bit confused on the keeper's costs. When you look at the overview, they show up as a dollar a piece.
~ < o > ~
08-23-2009, 09:52 AM
I edited in the prices for keepers, based on how valuable I thought they were with a little bit of a discount thrown in.
Jeff Fox
08-23-2009, 09:55 AM
I'll go check my keepers again, since I set them before they had prices.
Edit: You'll have to go back and look at my keepers again Chris because I dropped McNabb as 25 dollars is far too rich for my blood.
I tentatively switched to Ray Rice but if you can give me keeper prices on TO, Darren Sproles and Desean Jackson as well that would be awesome that way I can decide who is the bets fit for my team by dollar value.
~ < o > ~
08-23-2009, 11:38 AM
I'd put TO and Desean at 15, and Sproles would be at 5.
QBs are gonna be worth some dollars because they're the highest scoring players in the league, and Donovan is easily a top ten choice as far as QBs go. 25 for him is actually a good deal. In most auction drafts, you can't grab anybody for less then 25 in the first three rounds, and you've got to believe McNabb is an early third rounder at worst.

EDIT: Found it...
JESUS! BREES IS COSTING ME $45!!!
~ < o > ~
08-23-2009, 11:56 AM
I'll probably check it out and revise again later, it's kinda hard predicting values based on how people are going in standard ten man drafts, when our league is hardly standard with twelve teams. In FYF, QBs are by far the most important position to draft, but they're not so important in standard leagues, and since there's going to be some people who miss our draft, that means the cpu will have these guys jack the prices up on WRs and RBs, but not necessarily on QBs.
Basically, to give you an idea, Adrian Peterson will cost around 60-70, because the guys who miss the draft will jack the price up on him. After the seventh round, almost everybody will be broke, and it'll turn into basically a regular draft with everybody grabbing people for a dollar.
I honestly don't know what the values of anybody will be, I just assume that the CPU will jack the prices up on stud WRs past what they are worth because they don't take our scoring sytem into play, and QBs may be a steal because the CPU won't value them very highly when they should be the guys going for 40-60.
I just don't want to give the guys doing keepers to great of a deal, because if they can grab studs for ten bucks each, they're at a huge advantage over people who don't do keepers, I'm just not entirely sure how to value some of these guys.
~ < o > ~
08-23-2009, 11:57 AM
I don't see how much my keepers are costing me...
EDIT: Found it...
JESUS! BREES IS COSTING ME $45!!!
Brees is the best QB in the draft, and QBs score more points then everybody else. If ESPN could put together a mock auction draft with our league settings, Brees would be snagged for 60+ easily.
~ < o > ~
08-23-2009, 12:03 PM
But yeah, if you've never done a mock auction league draft, you really should do one. You'll realize that 200$ is only gonna last you so long, and then you'll start grabbing people for a dollar each. Basically, it'll only be an auction draft for the first six or seven rounds, then nobody will have money left. You can get involved with the high demand guys, or wait till round five and start snagging deals while people are out of money, it's just a strategy thing.
You can decide to buy the first three or four picks of the draft and then go dollar each for the rest of the way, or you can ignore all the high demand guys and steal all the 5-10 dollar guys. If you can save 30 bucks up past round seven, you can basically grab 15 guys at 2$ each if everyone is broke, because if everybody is, nobody can take anybody from you if you can raise the price.
I have no idea who the fuck to keep on my roster.

The draft is on midnight eastern Saturday, which is one minute after Friday ends, which means it's on Friday night for the alcoholics here.
So, the draft is:
Saturday midnight eastern
Friday eleven pm central
Friday ten pm mountain
Friday nine pm pacific
If you do not show up, I honestly have no idea what your team will become as it's an auction draft, not a pick'em draft, and I don't know how the computer will go about filling the rosters of those who don't show. Everybody gets a chance to nominate players to bid on, but highest bidder wins, and I don't know how low or how high the computer will go.
9 of 12 teams have keepers, with Jimbo, James, and Cooke not having any. If anything needs to be altered let me know as soon as possible, thanks.

As for bad move on the autopick, well robojimbo ended the draft with 100 dollars left to spend. Which is kinda funny. Robojames spent 18 on Brandon Marshall which is a bit pricey in my opinion for someone on his own teams shit list. I'm sure there are a couple other but they are more 1 or 2 dollar things.

The auction seems like it would make for a really interesting draft, but only if more than 4 people showed. It's no fun bidding against a crew of computer controlled teams that bid the ESPN standard player value regardless of roster situation or a player's current circumstances(Brandon Marshall getting drafted for the same price Friday night as he was before his suspension.) Auction drafts are only appealing if there's legit strategies being employed by all.
The fact that all teams still only start with $200 despite our larger rosters is something I find interesting. It could make for a really competitive draft where everyone finds their own way to budget their cash. But again, it only works if more than 4 people show.
